What to Expect- Preparing for Paint

A properly prepared surface is the key to a long lasting paint job and may mean the difference between painting every few years or a paint job that will far outlast an inferior one. Here’s what to expect:

  • Your furniture, floors and carpets should be protected from start to finish by moving of out the room if possible and putting back after completion and covering with drop cloths or poly plastic; wood floors are covered with red rosin paper and drop cloths while carpets are covered with self adhesive plastic and drop cloths; creates a clean and safe working environment.
  • All wood surfaces to be painted will be thoroughly washed with a mild detergent or solvent to remove dirt, grease, mildew, soap or oil film that may have accumulated over the years. Ceiling and Walls are cleaned to remove cob webs and surface dirt, if needed they are washed to remove any tobacco or stains. Any water stain, smoke stains, pen marks and other unsightly blemishes that could “bleed through” the new paint should be properly primed using an oil base stain blocking primer.
  • Any loose paint or imperfections on ceilings and walls removed by scrapping or sanding; cracks and holes are repaired by patching with spackle or drywall compound. Fiberglass mesh tape and screws in framing are installed where necessary for a more permanent repair, patched and repaired areas are primed before painting.
  • Woodwork is sanded to remove any imperfections and dull the surface, patched with an epoxy wood patch if needed, bare wood or areas in need primed, open joints and gaps caulked for cleaner and more finished appearance.
  • Every effort is made to minimize dust, and work areas are cleaned after completion to create as little disruption to your home as possible.
  • Quality materials are used; quality paint and materials give the best results and will last longer; two finish coats are usually recommended giving maximum coverage and durability.
  • The work is done in a neat and professional manner by skilled craftsmen who are polite, friendly, and work efficiently; there is no smoking, inappropriate language or loud music at the site.
  • Of course there should be no paint on window panes, carpets, floors, or anything else not being painted; a complete and thorough clean up of the site after completion of work (try to leave the work area cleaner than when we arrived.
  • Touchup paint is labeled and left for the homeowners’ convenience.

  • All surfaces to be finished are washed using a cleaning solution especially made the exterior ; washing removes dirt and air borne contaminates that will shorten the life of a paint job; mold and mildew areas are given special attention and washed with a solution of mold/mildew remover, bleach and hot water.
  • Shrubbery, walkways and grass are covered and protected; loose boards, siding, and shingles are secured; shutters are removed and remounted after completion, exterior lights are removed and upon request temporary lights put up until project is completed.
  • Scrapping loose or flaking paint to a sound surface; sanding scrapped areas using hand sanding and orbital electric sanders to a “feather edge; smooth areas such doors, fascia and eves are sanded to accept new paint better; bare wood and problem areas primed with the appropriate primer before finish painting.
  • Caulking any open gaps around windows, doors and trim using top of the line polyurethane caulk instead of basic and cheaper painters caulk; top of the line material and paint used at all time (there is a difference in paint and materials) Two finish coats are usually recommended for added coverage and durability.
  • Ladders taken down daily and neatly stacked out of the way for safety; daily clean up of job site and trash removal; all work completed by experienced and insured craftsman in neat, polite and professional manner.
  • Touchup paint is labeled and left for the homeowners’ convenience.
